The knives Opinel they are produced in eleven different lengths, numbered from 2 to 13 (models number 1 and 11 have not been in production since the 1930s).
It was invented in 1890 by Joseph Opinel (1872-1960) and is produced by the company of the same name, which is based in the town of San Giovanni di Moriana in the French region of Savoy.
Curiosity:
There crowned hand (symbol of the city of San Giovanni di Moriana), the logo that appears on the blade of each model, has been used since the first model; In 1565, King Charles IX of France ordered that each master cutler affix an emblem to his products to guarantee their origin and quality. In 1909, respecting this tradition, Joseph Opinel chose “La Main Couronnée” as his emblem.
The hand that blesses the crown is that of Saint John the Baptist on the coat of arms of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the city closest to Albiez-le-Vieux, cradle of the Opinel family.
Joseph Opinel adds a crown to remember that Savoy was a duchy.
Since then, all Opinel knife and tool blades are stamped with the image of La Main Couronnée.
